Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant recently emerged victorious in a breach-of-contract lawsuit, securing over $300,00 in damages and interest. This occurred after he claimed a local restaurant continued using his name and image without providing compensatiion. A win for the controversial player that may help him focus toward a new NBA season.
Morant secures lawsuit
In a legal showdown in Shelby County Chancery Court, Ja Morant was awarded more than $300,000 after suing Memphis restaurant The WIng Guru for breach of contract.
The ruling stipulates that the restaurant must cease usinh his image and likeness while compensating him with damages and interest. This legal victory provides a welcome reversal for the All-Star gaurd, whose off-court controversies have previously captured headlines.
Contract dispute roots and arbitrator ruling
Morant's claim centers on a promotional agreement signed in January 2022, which allowed The Wing Guru to use his likeness for advertising. However, the business allegedly halted payments within months, yet continued to exploit his image.
An arbitrator ruled in Morant's favor, awarding a total of $365,525.30 and issuing an injuction barring further misuse of his identity. Court documents later confirmed that The Wing Guru failed to respond to attempts at process serving, further bolstering Morant's legal standing.
