Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse has given a cautiously optimistic update on Joel Embiid's status for the 2025-26 NBA season, but uncertainty still hangs over the franchise's most important player.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Nurse admitted there are "a lot more decisions" to make before the start of training camp on October 1, including whether the reigning MVP will even be available for the first session.

Embiid, 31, has battled persistent injuries throughout his career, and his fitness is again the subject of intense speculation.

"But our main thing is that he's healthy to play and play to his nearest capabilities, because he's awesome, no doubt about that," Nurse said, while stressing that "all the news is positive" and that Embiid is "working very, very hard" in his recovery.

Career longevity questions remain

Despite Nurse's upbeat tone, recent reports have painted a more sobering picture. In July, Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer claimed that Embiid "may know that the end is near," suggesting the seven-time All-Star is aware his physical limitations might soon prevent him from performing at his peak level.

Embiid himself expressed frustration with his body's repeated breakdowns in an interview with ESPN last month.

"Every single year, you start asking yourself questions like, 'Why?'" he said, recalling the pain and exhaustion of long injury rehab sessions. "I don't know if I can do it again ... I can't do another minute."

Last season, Embiid played just 19 games - the lowest total in any campaign where he appeared at least once.

Since being selected first overall in the 2014 NBA Draft, the Cameroonian center has been sidelined for nearly half of his career, missing 452 games in 11 seasons.

For the Sixers, the uncertainty surrounding Embiid's availability is not just a preseason storyline - it could define the trajectory of their entire season.

Whether he's ready on October 1 or not, Philadelphia's championship hopes still hinge entirely on their superstar's ability to stay on the court.
